Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons may offer an unexpected feature: mouse functionality. While the practicality of this for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests included polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically used for computer mice, hints at a potential mouse-like mode for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they're unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, transforming into a mouse when rotated. Lenovo even includes a plastic slider for improved surface movement.
The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic controller rails—another rumored Switch 2 feature. This similarity further strengthens the speculation surrounding Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console.
