Twitch streamer PointCrow achieved a remarkable feat: conquering the brutal "Kaizo IronMon" challenge in Pokémon FireRed, utilizing a Flareon. This article delves into this impressive accomplishment and the challenge itself.
PointCrow completed an incredibly difficult Pokémon FireRed playthrough after 3,978 resets over 15 months. The "Kaizo IronMon" challenge significantly amplifies the intensity of a typical Nuzlocke run.
Restricted to a single Pokémon, victory against the Elite Four seemed insurmountable. Yet, his level 90 Flareon delivered the final blow to Champion Blue's Dugtrio, securing victory. An emotional PointCrow exclaimed, "3,978 resets and a dream! Let’s go!"
This demanding variation of the "IronMon Challenge" limits trainers to one Pokémon with randomized stats and movesets, further restricting choices to Pokémon with a base stat total under 600 (exceptions made for Pokémon evolving beyond this threshold). While PointCrow isn't the first to succeed, his dedication is truly impressive.
The Nuzlocke challenge originated with Californian screenwriter Nick Franco. In 2010, his Pokémon Ruby playthrough under extreme rules, documented in 4chan comics, sparked a widespread trend.
Initially featuring two core rules – catching only one Pokémon per location and releasing any fainted Pokémon – Franco highlighted on his website that the challenge fostered a deeper connection with in-game companions.
Since then, countless variations have emerged, including using only the first encountered wild Pokémon, avoiding wild encounters entirely, or randomizing starters. The "IronMon Challenge," and its even more difficult "Survival IronMon" variant (with limitations on healing and potion purchases), represent the latest evolution of these self-imposed hardships. The "Survival IronMon" variant adds further restrictions, such as limiting healing to ten instances and purchasing a maximum of 20 Potions before the first gym.
