Pokémon Card Market Update: Top Gainers and Losers - May 9

May 28,2025

Another week, another whirlwind in the Pokémon single card market as trainers eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Fortunately, the Black Bolt and White Flare Pokémon Center preorders managed to dodge a bot takeover this time.

The most significant price drop this week was for Greninja ex 214/167, which plummeted nearly 50% since the beginning of the year. We're also witnessing notable price reductions across cards from the Obsidian Flames and the elusive 151 expansions. On the flip side, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies has nearly doubled in value since January, a testament to its always-underrated artwork.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress, showcasing a thrilling battle against Venusaur and steadily climbing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquazza VMAX Alt Art is on an upward trajectory, gaining an impressive $100 in value since the start of the year. Let's delve into the biggest climbers and crashers in the Pokémon TCG market this week.

While Sword and Shield era Pokémon Cards are on the rise, Scarlet and Violet series cards are returning to more reasonable prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from 151 is a stunning card, now 34% cheaper than at the beginning of March. It's a must-have for any collection this year.

Bulbasaur was my first starter Pokémon back in Pokémon Blue, making the Bulbasaur IR card especially dear to me. It has dropped by a massive 52% since mid-March, making it an affordable gem to add to your collection.

From Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR remains one of the set's best cards. With a 40% price drop since February, now at $18.17, it's an excellent time to pick up this beauty.

Charizard ex SIR from Obsidian Flames boasts a striking stained glass look in its Tera form, making it a true showstopper. Although its price has only decreased by $5 since March, every little bit counts.

Greninja ex SIR experienced the most significant drop this month. Once poised to be the priciest Scarlet and Violet era card, it has been overshadowed by Prismatic Evolutions. Despite this, it remains a valuable card at $275, a stark contrast to its $411.62 price tag at the end of February.

Pokémon Card Climbers

Turning to this week's climbers, Rayquazza VMAX alt art stands out as one of the premier cards of the Sword and Shield era. Already valued at over $500, it's now at $649.99 and shows no signs of slowing down. It could very well reach $1,000 in a few years, so if you can afford it, grab one.

There's never enough love for Kanto in my book, and Charizard V Alt Art delivers with its dynamic battle against Venusaur. Its unique angle and sense of motion set it apart from the static shots common in many Pokémon cards. It has gained $40 since January and could easily surpass $200 before the year ends.

Dragonite V Alt Art is a highlight of Evolving Skies, featuring a fan-favorite Pokémon that can appear both adorable and fierce. Its artwork captures the cute side of Dragonite, contributing to its near doubling in value since mid-January. Now at $225, it's a card to watch before it climbs even higher. Pokémon Card Sealed Boosters

For those dedicated to pulling chase cards, here's what's currently in stock. Be cautious of pricing above MSRP; it's a tricky time for Pokémon trainers, so avoid overpaying.
