According to LEVEL-5's CEO, while the studio considered Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy a fitting conclusion, Nintendo ("Company ‘N’") played a pivotal role in bringing the series back.

At Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2024, Hino stated that Nintendo's encouragement was instrumental in the decision to create a new game. Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, set a year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, sees Professor Layton and Luke Triton investigating a mystery in the bustling American city of Steam Bison. The trailer hints at the involvement of Gunman King Joe, a gunslinger from a bygone era.

The game promises the signature challenging puzzles, this time enhanced by collaboration with QuizKnock, renowned puzzle creators. This partnership is expected to address the mixed reception of Layton's Mystery Journey, which deviated from the core series formula.
