Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 could hit the shelves by the end of 2025. Alongside this exciting news, there are whispers of a next-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions. According to GameReactor, insiders "close to Rockstar" have hinted that this port, along with a "next-gen upgrade patch," is in the works. This patch aims to enhance the gaming experience on current-gen systems, making gameplay smoother and more immersive.
Although specifics remain under wraps, GameReactor's sources suggest that both the port and the upgrade could launch as early as later this year. This aligns with reports from Nintenduo, which also claims that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 might see the light of day within Take-Two's fiscal year, ending March 31, 2026. It's still unclear whether this release will be available digitally, physically, or both.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, we hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10 score. As IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review stated, "Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game of rare quality; a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era." With such high praise, it's no wonder fans are eagerly anticipating its arrival on the Switch 2.
The potential Switch 2 port might not come as a shock, especially after Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new console during a recent Q&A with investors. Zelnick highlighted Nintendo's improved support for third-party publishers, saying, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform." He further noted that historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been challenging, but this time, Nintendo is addressing those issues effectively.
Zelnick's comments suggest that Take-Two is stepping up its game, planning to bring Civilization 7 (set for a June 5 launch), the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series, and Borderlands 4 (scheduled for September 12) to the Switch 2. Although these titles aren't surprising given Take-Two's history with the original Switch, Zelnick's statement leaves the door open for more titles from their catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, there's hope for classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to join the lineup on Nintendo's next console.
