Exciting news for fans of the Persona series: SEGA is considering a global release for Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X), as revealed in their latest financial statements for the fiscal year ending March 2024. The company noted that P5X is "starting off as expected" in terms of sales, and they are now contemplating expanding its reach to both Japan and global markets.
The gacha spinoff of the beloved Persona 5 series, known as The Phantom X, is currently in the spotlight. SEGA's financial report indicates that future expansion into Japan and global markets is on the table, sparking hope among fans worldwide.
Originally soft-launched on mobile and PC in China on April 12, 2024, Persona 5: The Phantom X expanded to Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and Taiwan on April 18. The game, developed by Black Wings Game Studio and published by Perfect World Games, is still in its open beta phase in these regions.
In P5X, players assume the role of a new protagonist, "Wonder," a high school student by day and a Persona-wielding "Phantom Thief" by night. The mission? To combat societal injustices caused by corruption and greed, a theme familiar to fans of the Persona series.
Wonder is initially equipped with a new Persona named Janosik, inspired by Slovakian literature and echoing the Robin Hood archetype. Alongside Wonder, the game features the return of Joker from the original Persona 5, and introduces a new character, YUI.
Like its predecessors, P5X retains the turn-based combat, social simulation, and dungeon crawling that fans love, but introduces a gacha system for acquiring new characters, adding a fresh layer to the gameplay.
A new roguelike game mode called "Heart Rail" has been introduced in the China-exclusive version of P5X. This mode, showcased by Persona content creator Faz, resembles Honkai Star Rail's Simulated Universe system, offering players the chance to select power-ups, explore different maps, and earn rewards upon completion.
In addition to the news about P5X, SEGA reported steady sales in its 'Full Game' category. Notable titles include Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which sold 1 million units globally in its first week after launching on January 26, 2024, and Persona 3 Reload, which achieved the same milestone in its first week in February, marking the fastest sales record for any Atlus title. Football Manager 2024 also saw significant success, attracting 9 million players since its November launch.
Looking ahead, SEGA plans to restructure its business, creating a new 'Gaming Business' segment. This segment will focus on online gaming, aiming to enter the North American market and establish it as a key pillar of their business model. Additionally, this segment will include the development and sale of slot machines by SEGA SAMMY CREATION and the operation of integrated resort facilities by PARADISE SEGASAMMY.
For FY2025, SEGA forecasts an increase in both sales and profits. They expect the Full Game segment to generate 93 billion Yen (approximately 597 million USD), marking a 5.4% increase from the previous year. Moreover, SEGA anticipates the release of a new title in the Sonic series, one of their flagship IPs, in the upcoming year.
