Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus strategy, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 games starting in January 2026. This change will affect the PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog, which will no longer include PS4 games as a primary benefit. Instead, PS4 titles will only be offered occasionally.
This update was revealed alongside February 2025's monthly titles on the PlayStation Blog. Sony emphasized that this transition won't impact the monthly titles subscribers have already claimed. However, PS4 games in the Games Catalog will remain available until they are rotated out during the monthly refresh.
"We’ll continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive, including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more," Sony stated. As part of this shift, the company plans to enhance the service by adding new PS5 titles monthly.
The PS4, launched in 2013, has been succeeded by the PS5, which arrived in 2020. Sony noted that a significant portion of its player base has already transitioned to the PS5, showing a preference for accessing and redeeming PS5 titles.
It remains to be seen whether Sony will relegate PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. Any such changes are expected to be announced closer to the implementation date.
