"Switch 2 GameCube Controller Limited to GameCube Classics: Nintendo"

The much-anticipated Nintendo GameCube library is set to join the Nintendo Switch Online service with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, and it's bringing along a classic controller. However, there's a catch in the fine print that suggests the new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 might be exclusively designed for GameCube games. A statement in the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer reads: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the GameCube controller is intended solely for use with GameCube games available through the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack, and may not be compatible with other Switch 2 games.

It's worth noting, as pointed out by VGC, that other Nintendo controllers with similar disclaimers have not always been strictly limited. Enthusiasts have successfully used retro controllers in various games where applicable. Interestingly, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer. The GameCube controller, with its ample buttons, could theoretically handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. This could be a matter of setting clear expectations or preventing potential frustration if someone attempts to use it for unintended purposes, like using it as a mouse.

Even if the new GameCube controller isn't to your liking, there's good news for existing accessory owners. Nintendo has confirmed that the GameCube Controller adapter, originally released for the Wii U, will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via its USB port. This means that those who already own the adapter will find it useful with the new console.

The Classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to be available at the console's launch, though exact pre-order dates have not yet been announced. The pre-order situation has been complicated by U.S. tariffs, adding a layer of uncertainty.

This update to the Nintendo Switch Online library will provide subscribers with access to a wide array of classic 2000s-era titles. At launch this summer, fans can look forward to playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2, among others. The library is set to expand in the future, with additional titles such as Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more on the horizon.

For those interested in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2, the GameCube controller, or any other related accessories and games, be sure to check our Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order hub regularly. It will be continuously updated with the latest news and information to help you stay informed.
