The Best Switch Visual Novels and Adventure Games in 2024 – From Fata Morgana and VA-11 Hall-A to Famicom Detective Club and Gnosia

In 2024, after exploring the best Switch party games, the exceptional Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the best visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This includes both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements, encompassing titles from various regions and release years. The list is presented without any particular ranking.

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection

Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation, though I initially lamented the lack of a physical release. The 2024 release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, both physically and digitally, is a stunning new entry. It feels like a genuine sequel, though this might not appeal to everyone. The production values are exceptional, and the shockingly good ending fully justifies its M rating. Unexpectedly, it's become a top contender for my game of the year. Download the demo today!

For those preferring to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection offers a fantastic introduction to classic adventure gameplay.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)

A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action is a personal favorite. Its compelling story, memorable music, striking aesthetic, and particularly its characters make it a standout. It’s perfectly at home on the Switch, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks, change lives.

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)

The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition is the definitive version of a storytelling masterpiece. This pure visual novel, enhanced with additional content, shines on the Switch. A truly unforgettable gothic horror experience with incredible music, it will stay with you long after you finish.

Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)

While sold separately on the eShop, and with separate physical releases, a North American bundle exists, justifying their inclusion as one entry. Both Coffee Talk games offer a relaxing experience with great stories and pixel art. If you enjoy coffee, interesting characters, and soothing music, this is for you.

Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)

This entry encompasses Tsukihime, Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo), and the recently released Fate/stay night Remastered. All are lengthy but rewarding. For newcomers to visual novels, Fate/stay night is a good starting point, but I highly recommend Tsukihime's remake. Witch on the Holy Night follows naturally after the other two.

PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)

Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo surprised me with its exceptional quality. The narrative, delivery, and even its meta-elements are captivating. This mystery adventure game features amazing characters, great art, and engaging mechanics.

Gnosia ($24.99)

Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, Gnosia blends adventure and visual novel elements. Identify the Gnosia among your crew and vote to put them into cold sleep. Beyond some minor RNG issues, it’s a fantastic experience.

Steins;Gate Series (Variable)

Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series, especially Steins;Gate Elite, is crucial for introducing newcomers to visual novels. While I hope the original version arrives on Switch, Steins;Gate Elite is an excellent entry point for anime fans. Playing the other Steins;Gate games is recommended after experiencing the original story.

AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)

Spike Chunsoft's AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative, a collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki, are exceptional adventure games. Despite their seemingly modest budget, they deliver compelling stories, music, and characters.

NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)

An adventure game with multiple endings that shifts between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. It follows the life of a young aspiring streamer. A truly unforgettable experience.

Ace Attorney Series (Variable)

Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The series is beloved for a reason, and now accessible on one handheld. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles serves as an excellent entry point.

Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)

The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror adventure and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While its grotesque imagery may not appeal to everyone, its excellent localization and stories are unforgettable.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)

While not a pure adventure game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim incorporates real-time strategy battles. This sci-fi masterpiece is a must-play.

This list isn't limited to ten games; I prioritized including titles I highly recommend, even encompassing entire series. If you have suggestions, please comment below. Thanks for reading! A separate list of otome games is in the works.
