The annual Feast of Winter Veil in World of Warcraft mirrors our real-world Christmas celebrations, offering unique rewards and new additions each year. A recently released lore video, a collaboration with PlatinumWoW, delves into the rich history of this beloved in-game event.
From its in-game origins to the infamous Metzen the Reindeer kidnappings, Winter Veil boasts a captivating Azerothian history. Functioning as WoW's version of Christmas, the event features special rewards and activities, consistently introducing new collectible items.
This new video, narrated by PlatinumWoW, explores the holiday's roots: the Dwarven legend of Greatfather Winter, a Titan-forged giant leaving snowy trails; the Tauren's traditions of spiritual reflection, renewal, and gratitude to the Earthmother; and the rise of Smokeywood Pastures, a Goblin enterprise that commercialized Winter Veil, echoing real-world Christmas commercialization.
The Metzen the Reindeer Saga
No Winter Veil lore video is complete without mentioning Metzen the Reindeer, named after former Warcraft creative director Chris Metzen. This unfortunate reindeer has endured three kidnappings: by pirates and Dark Iron Dwarves in Classic WoW, and by the Grinch in the current iteration. The video concludes with a humorous thank you from Metzen, voiced in Thrall's iconic voice (also voiced by Chris Metzen).
A Successful Collaboration
This isn't PlatinumWoW's first official collaboration with World of Warcraft. Previous collaborations include lore videos on Nerubians, Vrykul, the Scourge, World Trees, and Blackrock Depths, along with guides for events like Season of Discovery and Plunderstorm. Blizzard's recent partnerships with content creators, including Taliesin & Evitel and Hurricane, demonstrate a commitment to enriching the player experience.
