Director Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, recently offered an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. While the project, initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009 with game director Fumito Ueda involved, has faced delays, Muschietti assures fans it's not abandoned.
The director cited factors beyond creative control, specifically the IP's popularity and the resulting budgetary considerations, as contributing to the extended development time. He confirmed the existence of multiple scripts, indicating ongoing refinement of the project. This news follows Sony's recent announcement of several other game adaptations at CES 2025, including Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and an animated Ghost of Tsushima.
Muschietti, while not a self-described "big gamer," acknowledges the game's masterpiece status and his personal experience playing it multiple times. He's tackling the challenge of adapting the game's unique tone and iconic colossi, a challenge also faced by other developers, such as Capcom's 2024 Dragon's Dogma 2, which drew inspiration from Shadow of the Colossus.
The film aims to capture the essence of Ueda's original vision, a vision further explored in GenDesign's newly announced untitled sci-fi game. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the enduring legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues, with this adaptation promising to introduce both longtime fans and newcomers to its captivating world.
