A former Rockstar Games veteran has weighed in on swirling rumors about a potential re-release of *Grand Theft Auto IV* for the latest generation of consoles, suggesting that the game deserves a remaster. The speculation kicked off when Tez2, a well-known figure within the GTA community for his leaks, hinted at a possible *GTA IV* port for modern systems this year. He linked the rumored project to Rockstar's recent decision to shut down a *GTA V* Liberty City mod.
It's important to clarify that Rockstar has not officially hinted at plans to re-release *GTA IV*. Such a move would be surprising, considering the studio's current focus on *GTA VI*. However, Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical director who contributed to *GTA IV*, responded to the rumors on social media. Although unaware of the specific rumors, Vermeij expressed his belief that *GTA IV* "should be remastered," citing its quality and the success of other recent remasters, like *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered*.
Vermeij further praised *GTA IV*'s protagonist, Niko, as the best in the series and suggested that a potential remaster could involve porting the game to the latest version of the Rage engine, which Rockstar currently uses for game development.
Despite Vermeij's enthusiasm, Rockstar has not confirmed any plans for a *GTA IV* remaster. The studio's primary focus remains on the monumental task of developing *GTA VI*, set to launch in the fall of 2025. Launching a *GTA IV* remaster alongside *GTA VI* could split the audience's attention, especially if *GTA VI* sticks to its release schedule. An alternative approach might involve outsourcing the remaster to another studio, similar to what was done with *Red Dead Redemption*.
Some fans speculate that Liberty City, the setting of *GTA IV* and inspired by New York City, might make an appearance in *GTA VI*, either at launch or as post-launch DLC. *GTA VI* is set in the fictional state of Leonida, mirroring Florida and including Vice City, based on Miami.
While we await more concrete news, there's a wealth of information available on *GTA VI*, including detailed discoveries, 70 new screenshots, and expert analysis on how the game might perform on the PS5 Pro.
