In an unexpected twist, Frostpunk developer 11 bit Studios took to Twitter (X) on April 24 to unveil Frostpunk 1886, a complete remake of the beloved original, now powered by the Unreal Engine.
The announcement highlighted a brand-new Purpose Path, the much-anticipated mod support, and a host of other enhancements designed to honor the legacy of the original game. 11 bit Studios elaborated on these updates in a detailed Steam post on the same day, outlining their ambitious vision for this project.
Moving away from their proprietary Liquid Engine used in the first game, 11 bit Studios embraced the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, which they had successfully employed for Frostpunk 2. This shift inspired them to revisit and enhance the original Frostpunk. "Our goal is to expand upon it with improved visuals, higher resolution, and all the other possibilities Unreal has to offer," the developers explained.
The development of Frostpunk 1886 is now in full swing, with a targeted release date set for 2027. 11 bit Studios is committed to creating an experience that welcomes new players to the Frostpunk universe while delivering a game that seasoned fans will eagerly replay.
Looking ahead, the studio teased the possibility of future DLCs to bring even more new content to the game. They aim to increase their release frequency, starting with Frostpunk 1886, breaking the cycle of waiting over five years between titles. In the interim, fans can look forward to Frostpunk 2's free major update on May 8, its console launch this summer, and more, as outlined in the game's roadmap.
