NetEase's upcoming open-world RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, has been officially renamed Ananta. Initially unveiled at Gamescom 2023, the game has finally released a new trailer after a long period of silence, with further details promised on December 5th. Until then, enjoy the teaser:
The Significance of the Name Change
While the developers haven't commented on the reason behind the name change, "Ananta" translates to "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of the original title, "Mugen." The Chinese title also reinforces this meaning. The gaming community is divided on the rebranding, but overall relieved the project continues.
Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually striking, its lack of gameplay footage leaves Neverness to Everness potentially ahead in the eyes of some players. However, many find Ananta's aesthetic more appealing.
A Mysterious Rebranding
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all their previous social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only their Discord server remains, albeit renamed. This complete overhaul of their online presence has left many gamers perplexed.
Ananta casts players as an "Infinite Trigger," a supernatural investigator confronting paranormal threats. The game features characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila. For further gameplay details, visit the official website.
