During today's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation, Nintendo confirmed that while most Switch games will be backwards compatible, select titles are receiving special "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" upgrades with enhanced features. These premium editions include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and Mario Party: Jamboree.
Each Nintendo Switch 2 Edition offers distinct improvements. The showcase began with Super Mario Party: Jamboree gaining "Jamboree TV", a new mode featuring mouse controls, voice recognition technology, refined HD rumble, and innovative gameplay using the upcoming camera accessory.
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are getting visual and performance boosts including higher resolutions, smoother framerates, and HDR support. Additionally, a Nintendo Switch Online app feature called Zelda Notes will provide voice-guided assistance for finding Shrines and Koroks, along with QR code sharing for Tears of the Kingdom creations.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land expands with an exclusive new storyline titled Star-Crossed World, complementing its graphical and performance enhancements. Meanwhile, two upcoming titles - Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A - will benefit from 4K/60fps with HDR support and mouse controls (for Metroid) along with improved resolutions respectively.
All enhanced titles will receive both physical and digital releases. Selected games (including the Zelda titles, Mario Party, and Kirby) will offer paid upgrade paths for existing owners. The presentation also revealed third-party Nintendo Switch 2 Editions for Civilization 7 (featuring mouse support) and Street Fighter 6 (with exclusive game modes).
Nintendo had previously hinted at this system through a subtle webpage mention about the Virtual Game Card limitations for these enhanced editions. For complete details on today's announcements, visit our full Nintendo Switch 2 Direct recap.
