Game Freak, renowned for its Pokémon series, has unveiled a new adventure RPG, Pand Land, in Japan. This marks another foray beyond the studio's flagship franchise, following titles like Little Town Hero and HarmoKnight. Pand Land, an expansive and vibrant world exploration game focused on treasure hunting, is available on Android and iOS. This release comes amidst recent criticism of some Pokémon games' shorter development cycles. While ILCA handled the 2021 Gen 4 remakes, Game Freak simultaneously delivered Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and the Gen 9 DLC, alongside ongoing work on the next major Pokémon installment.
Pand Land's development demonstrates Game Freak's diversification and creative exploration. The game casts players as expedition captains traversing a vast, largely oceanic world, offering relaxed exploration alongside combat and dungeon challenges, both solo and multiplayer.
Currently, Pand Land is exclusively available in Japan. While no international release date is confirmed, Game Freak's pride in the project, as expressed by development director Yuji Saito ("We've been working hard to create a game that takes the scale of a console game and makes it easy and simple to play."), suggests potential future global availability.
Importantly, the release of Pand Land doesn't appear to compromise the development of the highly anticipated Pokémon Legends: Z-A, slated for release next year. The upcoming title, while still shrouded in mystery, is generating considerable excitement based on the success of its predecessor.
