Bethesda appears to be gearing up for Starfield's long-rumored PlayStation 5 release currently slated for Spring 2026, reportedly launching alongside a major expansion.
Reports indicate Starfield missed its planned 2025 PS5 debut partially due to underwhelming sales of its first expansion, Shattered Space, which launched in September 2024 to mixed Steam reviews. The studio had originally planned annual expansions following Shattered Space.
The PS5 version will reportedly launch concurrently with Starfield's second expansion and various quality-of-life improvements. Sources suggest fans shouldn't expect announcements during gamescom this month or surprise drops resembling The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered's release strategy.
Questions about Bethesda's continued commitment to Starfield have persisted since launch. Despite promising ongoing support and at least one additional story expansion following Shattered Space during June 2024 communications, recent silence has frustrated players - particularly following Starfield's absence from June's Xbox showcase.
Launched in September 2023 as Bethesda's first new IP in 25 years, Starfield attracted 15 million players but received noticeably cooler reception than Fallout or Elder Scrolls titles. The Shattered Space expansion failed to significantly improve player sentiment.
Microsoft's Phil Spencer revealed discussions with Todd Howard about pacing content updates, acknowledging player feedback wanting more features alongside expansions. However, Shattered Space faced criticism primarily for lacking meaningful space-focused content despite featuring "space" prominently in its title.
Following recent Microsoft layoffs that impacted Bethesda's London office and canceled an unannounced MMORPG, the studio recently reaffirmed its commitment to Starfield updates while promising details about upcoming plans.
