Reviews & Mini-Views

Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)

Konami's recent track record with classic game collections has been outstanding, and the Castlevania Dominus Collection is another prime example. This third installment focuses on the Nintendo DS trilogy, expertly handled by M2. But this collection offers more than just the core games; it might be the most comprehensive Castlevania package yet.

The Nintendo DS Castlevania games represent a pivotal, if somewhat uneven, period in the franchise's history. Positively, each game possesses a unique identity, resulting in a diverse collection. Dawn of Sorrow, a direct sequel to Aria of Sorrow, is improved here with updated controls that replace clunky touchscreen elements. Portrait of Ruin cleverly utilizes a dual-character mechanic, while Order of Ecclesia ups the ante with increased difficulty and a Simon's Quest-inspired design. All are excellent games.

However, this trilogy marked the end of Koji Igarashi's era of exploration-focused Castlevania titles. While innovative, some felt the series was losing steam. Were these games a testament to IGA's creative evolution, or a desperate attempt to recapture a dwindling audience? The answer remains elusive. Regardless, the collection's native ports, not emulations, allow for enhanced controls and improved presentation, making Dawn of Sorrow arguably a top-tier Castlevania title.

The collection is brimming with options and extras. Players can select game regions, customize button mapping, and even choose controller layouts. A delightful credits sequence and an art gallery add extra charm. A soundtrack player allows you to create custom playlists, and a comprehensive compendium details equipment, enemies, and items. While a few more screen arrangement options would be welcome, this is a remarkably complete package.

But the surprises don't end there! The notoriously difficult arcade game, Haunted Castle, is included. This brutal but musically impressive title is complemented by a full remake, Haunted Castle Revisited, by M2. This effectively acts as a bonus, a completely new Castlevania game, hidden within the collection!

Castlevania Dominus Collection is a must-have for Castlevania fans. The inclusion of a fantastic new game alongside the enhanced DS titles makes it an incredible value. If you're unfamiliar with the series, this is an excellent starting point. Another triumph for Konami and M2.

SwitchArcade Score: 5/5

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)

My experience with Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn has been a mixed bag. While Tengo Project's previous remakes have been exceptional, this one presents unique challenges. The original Shadow of the Ninja is less celebrated than their other titles, and this remake of an 8-bit game differs from their previous 16-bit projects.

After a promising preview at Tokyo Game Show, my full playthrough revealed a less polished game compared to Tengo Project's other work. However, the improvements are undeniable, from the stunning visuals to the refined weapon and item systems. The characters are better differentiated, and it's undeniably superior to the original while retaining its core spirit. Fans of the original will adore this remake.

For those who found the original merely adequate, Reborn offers a similar experience, albeit improved. Simultaneous access to both the chain and sword is a significant enhancement, and the new inventory system adds depth. The presentation is excellent, masking its 8-bit origins. However, some challenging difficulty spikes and its relatively short length are drawbacks. It's the best version of Shadow of the Ninja, but it's still Shadow of the Ninja.

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn is another solid effort from Tengo Project, significantly enhancing the original. Its appeal depends heavily on your opinion of the original game. Newcomers will find a fun but not essential action game.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

Pinball FX – The Princess Bride Pinball ($5.49)

Two new Pinball FX DLC tables have arrived, coinciding with a major Switch update. The Princess Bride Pinball stands out with its inclusion of voice clips and video clips from the film—a welcome addition. The table's mechanics feel authentic and are enjoyable for both casual and competitive players.

Zen Studios often misses the mark with licensed tables, but The Princess Bride Pinball is a success. While not groundbreaking, its design choices are solid and the overall experience is satisfying.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Pinball FX – Goat Simulator Pinball ($5.49)

Goat Simulator Pinball embraces the absurdity of its license, resulting in a uniquely bizarre table. The goat-related antics are hilarious, but the table's complexity might challenge newcomers. It's a more rewarding experience for veteran pinball players.

This is a solid DLC offering from Zen Studios, showcasing their willingness to experiment. It's challenging but ultimately rewarding, especially for Goat Simulator fans willing to invest the time.

Select New Releases

Bakeru ($39.99)

As mentioned in yesterday's review, this 3D platformer from Good-Feel is a charming and breezy experience. Despite inconsistent framerate on Switch, the game's charm, unique gameplay, and Japan-themed elements make it enjoyable.

Holyhunt ($4.99)

A top-down arena shooter reminiscent of classic 8-bit games, though not necessarily a direct homage. It's a simple shoot-and-dash experience with bosses.

Shashingo: Learn Japanese with Photography ($20.00)

A language-learning game that uses photography as a learning tool. Its unique approach might appeal to visual learners.
