According to The Hollywood Reporter, Joseph Kosinski is set to helm a new Miami Vice film for Universal.
Dan Gilroy, the writer-director behind Nightcrawler, has been tapped to pen the screenplay, building on an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has recently been occupied with writing multiple episodes of the Star Wars spinoff series Andor, which was created by his brother Tony.
Miami Vice first gained prominence as an influential NBC police drama created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, airing for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. Starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Miami detectives Crockett and Tubbs, the series is still celebrated for redefining the visual style, mood, and soundtrack of television.
A cinematic adaptation was previously directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) in 2006, featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
Details remain sparse at this point, but it's clear that Miami Vice won't be the immediate next project for Kosinski—the director behind Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy—following the June release of his upcoming film, F1.
Fortunately, this schedule should give him ample time to decide which Ferrari to track down.
