EDR Blackbox Scanning Tool & PDF Accident Reports for Crash Investigators

WHEN INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE COLLISION

Use the CrashScan App with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to scan vehicle computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), also known as the "blackbox," when supported (see vehicle compatibility below). CrashScan assists investigators in identifying, capturing, and interpreting stored accident data. This crash information helps validate auto insurance claims and serves as a key indicator for determining liability or identifying questionable collision reports.

VEHICLE SUPPORT

(Event Data Recorder & Full System Diagnostic Scan)

Internationally supports over 3000 unique year, make, and model combinations. Confirm compatibility here:

DETAILED ACCIDENT REPORTS

When the CrashScan completes successfully, the report provides detailed information on impact severity, impact direction (front/rear/side collision), and contextual factors, including:

- Accident severity classification: minor, moderate, or severe

- EDR trigger threshold specifications

- 5.0 seconds of pre-crash data including vehicle speed, brake and accelerator pedal usage, and steering input

- Occupant count and seatbelt status

- Estimated repair costs (economic impact in dollars)

- Likelihood of structural crush damage

- Injury risk assessment thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)

- Comparative g-force measurements from everyday activities

*Injury risk calculations incorporate stored acceleration data, scientific research, and databases including the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS)

PRIVACY LEGISLATION STATUS (EDR DATA)

Canada: No specific legislation; EDR data is classified as diagnostic and "non-private." However, insurance companies typically obtain consent as standard practice.

United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, enacted in December 2015, establishes limitations on EDR data access and specifies that collected information belongs to the vehicle owner or lessee. Seventeen states have implemented statutes governing event data recorders and privacy protections: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. These state regulations generally require vehicle owner or policyholder consent for EDR data download, with specific

exceptions under certain circumstances.
