Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a substantial increase in player numbers on Steam following the highly anticipated release of Patch 8. This update has positioned developer Larian Studios well to concentrate on their upcoming projects.

Last week, Patch 8 brought 12 new subclasses to Baldur’s Gate 3, along with a new photo mode, sparking a wave of players eager to explore these features. On Steam, the game reached a peak concurrent player count of 169,267 over the weekend—a remarkable achievement for a single-player RPG in its second year. Specific player numbers for PlayStation and Xbox remain undisclosed.

Swen Vincke, Larian’s founder, expressed optimism on Twitter regarding the game’s future, attributing the player resurgence to both Patch 8 and the thriving modding community. He noted this momentum allows Larian to focus on creating their next major title. “Patch 8 got a lot of people playing again,” he stated. “It took a lot of development effort, but I’m happy we did it.”

With mod support flourishing, Vincke believes Baldur’s Gate 3 will maintain its popularity. “It gives us room to focus on making our next big thing as good as we can,” he added. Patch 8 marks the final significant update for the game, capping off a successful period for Larian. The title debuted critically acclaimed and commercially successful in 2023, sustaining strong sales through 2024 and into 2025.

Larian surprised the gaming industry by announcing they would shift focus away from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons to develop a new game, entering a media blackout to prioritize this secretive project. Meanwhile, D&D owner Hasbro indicated interest in continuing the series. Dan Ayoub, Hasbro’s SVP of digital games, mentioned they are formulating plans for the future but offered no specifics. While acknowledging the desire for a Baldur’s Gate 4, Ayoub emphasized a cautious approach, suggesting announcements are forthcoming.

In the meantime, Baldur’s Gate 3 remains a vibrant community-driven experience, setting the stage for what could be an exciting evolution of the franchise.
