Capcom Removes Games for Windows Live From 2010's Lost Planet 2, Making Online Co-Op Impossible

Capcom has quietly updated Lost Planet 2 to remove Games for Windows Live (GFWL), effectively disabling online features and erasing existing save files.

The change has surprised many Lost Planet fans on the subreddit, especially since Lost Planet 2 is fundamentally a multiplayer experience. As we noted in our 2010 review: "At its core, it’s a potentially great action game with stunning visuals, but its confusing exposition, clunky structure, and frustrating checkpoint system overshadow much of the fun—plus, it’s nearly unplayable as a single-player title. There are a few memorable moments, particularly during rare co-op sessions, but they don’t outweigh the flaws."

Losing save data is disappointing enough, but the real concern lies in that final point—“it’s basically unplayable as a single-player game”—because without GFWL, Lost Planet 2 has lost a cornerstone of its design.

"The entire appeal of the series is co-op," said one player. "Might as well just delete the game from Steam at this point," while another asked in disbelief: "…they removed online functionality from a game designed for online co-op?"

PlayGFWL was Microsoft’s online gaming platform, offering Xbox achievements, multiplayer connectivity, and cross-platform play—features now deprecated. Players of affected games must either endure long login delays or wait for developers to patch them, which is what fans are hoping for here. But with Lost Planet 2 now 15 years old, it’s uncertain whether an update will come.

On the bright side, this won’t affect new players—Lost Planet 2 has been pulled from sale. Capcom has posted a notice on its Steam storefront: "We are aware of an issue that some customers may be experiencing during game installation which is related to Games for Windows LIVE. We are temporarily disabling the purchase option on Steam while we investigate the matter further. We will keep you informed of the progress of the investigation. Thank you for your patience."

Other Capcom titles, including Street Fighter x Tekken and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, have also been affected, with identical messages appearing on their Steam pages. Still, some fans hope this is temporary—when Capcom removed GFWL from Resident Evil, they later replaced it with Steamworks multiplayer.

We’ve reached out to Capcom for comment and will update you when we hear back.

We thought Lost Planet 2 was 'okay' when it released way back in 2010.
