Final Fantasy IX has unveiled a dedicated 25th anniversary website, teasing multiple upcoming projects. Discover what Square Enix has planned to celebrate this milestone and potential future developments.

Square Enix has officially launched a commemorative website for Final Fantasy IX's 25th anniversary. The platform reveals plans for "special merchandise and collaborations" honoring this landmark event.
The anniversary collection features premium FF9 memorabilia including character figurines, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtrack CDs, and illustrated storybooks. The company hints at additional announcements throughout the anniversary period.
Originally launched on July 7, 2000 for PlayStation, FF9 has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. Square Enix later included it in their 2012 Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Ultimate Box Japanese edition. The game received mobile remasters in February 2016 for iOS/Android, followed by PC, PS4 (2017), and Switch/Xbox One/Windows 10 (2019) releases.

The anniversary site's launch has reignited speculation about a potential FF9 remake, fueled by the success of Final Fantasy VII's remake series. Ranked 4th in NHK's 2019 poll of Japan's favorite FF titles, FF9's enduring popularity makes it a strong candidate for modernization, though the website provides no direct confirmation.
Another unresolved project is the long-awaited FF9 anime adaptation. Announced in 2021 as "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," the series was to explore Vivi's descendants ten years after the original story. Despite initial partnerships with Cyber Group Studios for distribution and production, the project stalled after the French company's October 2024 bankruptcy.
Currently, production companies United Smile and Newen Studios have expressed interest in acquiring the rights to continue development of the FF9 anime as part of Cyber Group's asset acquisition process.
