Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were abuzz with excitement after spotting mentions of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages. However, those references quickly vanished, leading to much speculation. Now, Nintendo has stepped forward to clarify the situation surrounding VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In an official statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo clarified that the initial information regarding VRR was incorrect: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When asked about future support for VRR in docked mode, the company responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic." This means that, for now, those playing on a TV with their new console won't benefit from VRR.
This update follows a period of confusion, as the original VRR mention was first noticed and then rapidly removed. The gradual disappearance of these mentions from various websites was tracked by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.
While this may disappoint those who were hoping for VRR support in TV mode at the launch of the Switch 2, there's still a glimmer of hope. Sony, for example, introduced VRR support to the PS5 through a post-launch update, suggesting that Nintendo might do something similar in the future.
In other news related to the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo has released a list of games that will receive free performance upgrades on the new console, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has assured that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand throughout the holiday season.
