The original Famicom Detective Club games, The Missing Heir and The Girl Who Stands Behind, captivated players in the late 1980s with their atmospheric mysteries set in the Japanese countryside. Emio, the Smiling Man continues this tradition, placing players once again in the role of an assistant detective at the Utsugi Detective Agency. This time, the task is to unravel a series of murders linked to the infamous serial killer, Emio, the Smiling Man.

Launching globally on August 29, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, this new installment marks the first new Famicom Detective Club story in 35 years. Its initial cryptic teaser, featuring a mysterious figure in a trench coat and a smiley-faced paper bag, ignited widespread speculation.

The game's synopsis sets the stage: "A student is found dead, his head covered with a paper bag bearing an unsettling smiley face. This disturbing image echoes a recurring clue in a string of unsolved murders from 18 years ago, linking the case to Emio, the Smiling Man—a killer of urban legend who is said to grant his victims ‘a smile that will last forever.’"

Players will investigate the murder of Eisuke Sasaki, following clues that lead back to cold cases. Interviews with classmates and others connected to the case, along with meticulous examination of crime scenes, are crucial to solving the mystery.

Joining the investigation is Ayumi Tachibana, a returning character known for her sharp interrogation skills, and Shunsuke Utsugi, the agency director who previously worked on the eighteen-year-old cold cases.

The initial cryptic teaser for Emio, the Smiling Man generated significant buzz, its darker tone contrasting sharply with Nintendo's typically family-friendly image. One fan on Twitter (now X) even accurately predicted the game's nature before its official reveal.

Series producer and writer Yoshio Sakamoto shed light on the creation of Emio, the Smiling Man in a recent YouTube video. He described the original Famicom Detective Club games as interactive movies, a concept he aimed to expand upon in this new installment.

The series' acclaimed storytelling and atmosphere are central to its appeal. Inspired by the success of the 2021 Switch remakes, Sakamoto decided to create a new chapter. "I knew we'd be able to make something good. So, I decided to do it," he explained.

Sakamoto's creative influences, including horror filmmaker Dario Argento, are evident in the series' atmosphere. The use of music and imagery, particularly in The Girl Who Stands Behind, draws inspiration from Argento's work. Composer Kenji Yamamoto recalled Sakamoto's instructions to make the final scene of The Girl Who Stands Behind as terrifying as possible, resulting in a dramatic audio climax.

Emio, the Smiling Man introduces a new urban legend as its central theme, a departure from the superstitious sayings and ghost stories explored in previous installments. The Missing Heir delved into a village curse connected to a series of killings, while The Girl Who Stands Behind involved a haunting school legend.

Sakamoto has spoken extensively about the creative freedom afforded to the development team during the creation of the original Famicom Detective Club games. Nintendo's hands-off approach allowed for uninhibited exploration of ideas.

The original games received positive critical acclaim upon their Japanese release, achieving a 74/100 Metacritic score based on critic reviews.

Sakamoto describes Emio, the Smiling Man as the culmination of the team's collective experience, a product of extensive collaboration and a commitment to a powerful narrative.
