Phantom Blade Zero is set to offer an engaging experience with four difficulty options and a wealth of new gameplay features. Dive into the latest updates on the development of Phantom Blade Zero and what you can anticipate when it launches in 2025.
Phantom Blade Zero will feature four distinct difficulty levels: easy, ordinary, difficult, and extremely difficult. Despite initial comparisons to Soulslike games due to its aesthetic and combat showcased at the PlayStation Showcase 2023, the inclusion of multiple difficulty options sets it apart from the notoriously challenging Soulslike genre.
Game Director Soulframe clarified this distinction in a tweet following the Summer Game Fest 2024, emphasizing that the team's goal was never to create another Soulslike. Instead, they aimed for "combo-driven, heart-pumping combat that is hectic, rewarding, and exhilarating." While the game draws inspiration from Soulslike titles with its multi-layered maps and hidden areas, Soulframe insists that "the similarities stop there." He described Phantom Blade Zero as "Ninja Gaiden Combat on a Souls Game Map," blending intense hack-and-slash action with expansive exploration.
Recent interviews have shed light on several exciting gameplay elements of Phantom Blade Zero. Players will have access to an impressive arsenal, choosing from 30 primary and 20 secondary weapons, each offering unique gameplay mechanics and effects. The main story is expected to take around 20-30 hours to complete, with an additional 20-30 hours of side content to explore.
Boss fights in Phantom Blade Zero will feature at least two phases. If a player fails during the second phase, they can restart directly from that point, skipping the first phase. A new game mode, "Li Wulin," allows players to rematch previously defeated bosses, unlocking new hidden bosses to challenge. Additionally, there's a mechanic that influences the game's ending, though details on how it works and the number of possible endings remain undisclosed.
The trailer indicates that the release date for Phantom Blade Zero will be announced in 2025. The game's official Twitter (X) page celebrated the Lunar New Year with a video where Soulframe teased more exciting announcements throughout the year, promising to unveil something unprecedented for fans.
Phantom Blade Zero is currently in development for PlayStation 5, with plans for a PC release as well. No official release date has been set yet.
