Escape the Cursed Forest: A Simple Non-Field RPG

Embark on a minimalist RPG adventure as you, the village's best hunter, attempt to escape a cursed forest. This isn't your typical RPG; it focuses on strategic choices and resource management rather than complex combat.

Prologue: You've traveled to a hunting tournament near the royal capital, only to find the forest eerily deserted. All that remains are the remnants of a large hunter encampment. Your journey begins with a disconcerting discovery: you're hopelessly lost, trapped in a seemingly inescapable loop within the woods.

The Elven Curse: Aided by Foria, a mischievous quarter-elf, your goal is to unravel the mystery of the forest's curse and find your way to freedom. Gameplay is streamlined, with most actions requiring only one to three button presses.

Character Creation: While character customization is limited, you can repeatedly reroll your stats until you're satisfied. Remember to check your stat growth rate before beginning your adventure, as this information isn't accessible in-game. Losing all your life force results in game over; keep at least two "talismans" on hand for revival.

Foria, the Peddler Quarter-Elf: This enigmatic boy (or is he?) acts as your guide, offering cryptic assistance and crucial items.

Gameplay:

  • Exploration: Navigate the forest by exploring unexplored areas. The success of each exploration attempt depends on your character's stats and the area's "fog depth."

  • Beast Encounters: Wild animals, from wolves to surprisingly aggressive frogs, inhabit the forest. Defeating them yields materials for trading with Foria. Leveling up through combat is absent; the focus is on escaping the curse. Battles are entirely avoidable, though this requires skill, luck, or a good deal of playtime. Combat involves maintaining distance to safely shoot arrows. If cornered, you can attempt a risky withdrawal or use a "flash" ball for a guaranteed escape. Close-quarters combat is to be avoided.

  • Cloak System: Craft a cloak from gathered materials to enhance your abilities. Up to three layers can be added, each boosting your stats. Note that the outer layer can be damaged and eventually destroyed.

Game Features:

  • Minimalist controls.
  • Emphasis on strategic decision-making and resource management.
  • Cloak crafting and layering system.
  • Autosave system (though not during combat; it's recommended to save in the base menu before exiting).

Version 1.2 Update (December 18, 2024): Bug fixes, including addressing an issue causing unexpected transitions to the character creation mode. Previous updates included minor bug fixes, text corrections, and credit additions.

This is a game about the journey of escape, not about traditional RPG progression. Enjoy the challenge!

Elven Curse is an interesting take on the RPG genre, but it can feel a bit too simple at times. The strategic choices are fun, but I wish there were more depth to the gameplay. Still, it's a unique experience.
