Activision has confirmed that the introduction of Directed mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has nearly doubled the number of players engaging with the main quest. While many players of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies focus on survival, Directed mode has significantly shifted some of the focus towards the storyline.

Since the debut of the first Call of Duty Zombies mode in World at War, the game mode has always incorporated a narrative. This storyline has grown immensely over the years with each new Zombies experience, a trend that continues with Black Ops 6. Despite a decline in the overall player base for Black Ops 6 since its launch, the Zombies mode still boasts a dedicated community. The mode challenges up to four players to fend off waves of increasingly difficult enemies, which often leads players to prioritize upgrading their weapons and defenses over completing the story. However, the introduction of Zombies Directed mode in the Season 1 update has been a game-changer for the community.

According to a recent Call of Duty blog post, Directed mode has boosted the main quest completion rate from 4% to 8.23%. This statistic is derived from 480 million hours of Black Ops 6 Zombies gameplay, with a small portion of that time occurring since the Directed mode's release on November 14. Treyarch designed Directed mode to encourage more players to engage with the Zombies main quest, and the doubling of completion rates is being hailed as a success. Despite this improvement, Treyarch acknowledges that over 90% of players still do not complete the main quest and are working on further enhancements to increase this figure.

Over the years, the Zombies narrative has explored complex themes such as interdimensional portals, zero-point energy, time travel, and teleportation, which can be challenging for newcomers to understand.
