Following the warm reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speculation is rife about which Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. With Fallout 3 frequently mentioned—especially after a 2023 leak—how might Bethesda enhance its 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?

Bruce Nesmith, a key designer on Fallout 3, highlighted the game’s lackluster gun combat, predicting significant upgrades in a potential remaster.

In a conversation with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely feature shooting mechanics akin to those in Fallout 4.

“Look at Fallout 4 to understand what Bethesda deemed necessary to improve from Fallout 3,” Nesmith remarked.

“Fallout 4 saw extensive refinements to gun combat, as Fallout 3 was Bethesda’s first attempt at a shooter-style game. The results were remarkable.”

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts a suite of visual and gameplay enhancements. It delivers 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, alongside revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and menus. New dialogue, improved third-person perspective, and advanced lip-sync technology further elevate the experience. Fans have praised these updates, with some arguing Oblivion Remastered feels more like a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified its choice to pursue a remaster.

Nesmith indicated that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely follow a similar path to Oblivion Remastered with its upgrades.

“Fallout 3’s combat didn’t measure up to contemporary shooters,” he noted. “It’s an RPG shooter, not a fast-paced one. But Fallout 4’s combat improvements were substantial, and I expect those to carry over.”

“Oblivion Remastered wasn’t just aligned with Skyrim’s 2011 standards,” he continued. “Its visuals surpass even Skyrim’s latest graphical updates.” Nesmith described The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered as akin to “Oblivion 2.0.”

Bethesda is juggling multiple projects, including The Elder Scrolls VI, potential Starfield expansions, ongoing Fallout 76 updates, and the Fallout TV show, which will explore New Vegas in Season 2. Fans have plenty to look forward to.
