Dive into the enchanting world of South of Midnight, where Deep South folktales come to life. Compulsion Games unveiled exciting details about this action-adventure game at the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, including its narrative, gameplay mechanics, and much-anticipated release date.
In a captivating Xbox Wire article, Zaire Lanier, Compulsion Games' writer and narrative designer, shared insights into South of Midnight. The game is set to launch on April 8, 2025, immersing players in the town of Prospero, a melting pot of Southern-inspired locales ranging from flooded countrysides to abysmal swamps and Appalachian mountains.
The story kicks off with protagonist Hazel and her mother preparing for an impending hurricane. After a heated argument, Hazel steps outside just as their home is swept away by the flood. Driven by the need to find her mother, Hazel embarks on a quest that unveils her true heritage, drawing her into a realm populated by creatures from Southern folklore.
Hazel's journey takes a mystical turn when she encounters Catfish, a giant talking creature stranded in a tree after the hurricane. Catfish reveals to Hazel that she is a Weaver, endowed with magical abilities to perceive and manipulate the threads that weave the fabric of fate. As she navigates this fantastical world, Hazel must confront Haints, corrupted beings that spread decay, using her Weaving powers to restore them and the environment.
Early access to South of Midnight is available with the Premium Edition, priced at $49.99, launching on April 3, 2025, on Steam and the Xbox Store. The base game will be available for $39.99, and players can also enjoy it on day one with a Game Pass subscription.
South of Midnight introduces an innovative gameplay mechanic centered around threads and the art of Weaving. Hazel's combat arsenal includes spells like Push, Pull, and Weave, which provide strategic advantages in battle. Game director Jasmin Roy emphasized the importance of timing in utilizing these abilities: pulling enemies close for melee attacks, pushing them away to disrupt their advances, and weaving to follow up with powerful strikes.
Hazel's weapons, inspired by textile crafting and traditional spinning wheels, include a spindle, weaving hooks, and a distaff. These tools allow her to engage Haints in various ways, ultimately purging them of their corruption. Beyond combat, Weaving is crucial for exploration and puzzle-solving, enabling Hazel to conjure past incarnations of objects, like a ghostly carriage or a glider.
As Hazel journeys through diverse regions, each governed by a mythical creature with a unique Southern Gothic backstory, she must collect Echoes—fragments of haunted memories—to heal these corrupted beings. Art director Whitney Clayton highlighted one such creature, Two-Toed Tom, a colossal albino alligator adorned with weapons and vegetation. Hazel's mission involves battling these creatures in epic confrontations before using her Weaving powers to restore them and ultimately reunite with her mother.
With its rich narrative, innovative gameplay, and deep connection to Southern folklore, South of Midnight promises to be a captivating addition to the action-adventure genre, launching soon on Xbox and Steam.
