Civilization 7 Steam Reviews: Mixed, But Publisher Optimistic

Civilization 7's launch has been met with a mixed reception on Steam, prompting concerns from some players. However, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick remains optimistic, believing the game's core fanbase will ultimately embrace it.

The game's early access release, primarily targeting dedicated Civilization players, has seen criticism focusing on the user interface (UI), limited map variety, and a perceived lack of expected features. Firaxis has acknowledged this feedback and committed to improvements, including UI enhancements, the addition of team-based multiplayer, and a broader range of map types.

Despite some negative reviews, including a notably low score from Eurogamer, Zelnick highlighted the generally positive Metacritic score of 81 and numerous reviews exceeding 90. He attributed the negative feedback to the significant changes implemented in Civilization 7, particularly the innovative three-age campaign system with simultaneous Age Transitions. This system, a departure from previous Civilization titles, involves selecting a new civilization, choosing retained legacies, and witnessing world evolution at each transition. Zelnick believes this novel approach will eventually resonate with players.

While Zelnick expresses confidence in the game's long-term appeal, Firaxis faces the immediate challenge of improving player sentiment, especially on Steam. The platform's user review rating is vital for visibility and overall success, making addressing player concerns a high priority.
