Star Wars Outlaws: A Galactic Adventure Inspired by Samurai and Open-World Classics

Star Wars Outlaws' creative director, Julian Gerighty, recently revealed key inspirations behind the game's development, drawing parallels to acclaimed titles like Ghost of Tsushima and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. This blend of influences promises a unique open-world experience within the Star Wars universe.

Ghost of Tsushima's Immersive World: Gerighty cited Ghost of Tsushima as a major influence, praising its cohesive world-building and immersive gameplay. Unlike games relying on repetitive tasks, Ghost of Tsushima's seamless integration of story, world, and character resonated deeply. This inspired Gerighty to craft a similarly immersive Star Wars experience, allowing players to fully inhabit the role of an outlaw in a galaxy far, far away. The aim is to create a captivating narrative where players truly live the Star Wars fantasy.

Learning from Assassin's Creed Odyssey's Scope: Assassin's Creed Odyssey's vast explorable world and RPG elements also played a significant role. Gerighty admired the game's freedom and scale, but opted for a more focused narrative experience in Star Wars Outlaws. While drawing inspiration from Odyssey's expansive world design, Gerighty aimed for a more concise and engaging adventure, ensuring player engagement from beginning to end, rather than a sprawling, potentially overwhelming, playtime. He even consulted directly with the Odyssey development team, leveraging their expertise in managing world size and traversal distances.

Embracing the Outlaw Fantasy: The core concept of the scoundrel archetype, reminiscent of Han Solo, served as the central pillar of Star Wars Outlaws’ design. Gerighty emphasized the game's commitment to capturing the essence of being a rogue in a galaxy brimming with adventure and opportunity. This translates to diverse gameplay: from cantina Sabacc games to speeder chases, starship piloting, and planetary exploration, all seamlessly interwoven to enhance the feeling of living the outlaw life within the Star Wars universe.
