Chess Enters the Esports Arena Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup!

The ancient game of chess is making headlines as a new addition to the 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC) lineup. This unexpected inclusion marks a significant moment for the game, bridging its rich history with the dynamic world of esports.

A Historic Partnership Ushers in a New Era for Chess

A groundbreaking collaboration between Chess.com, chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has paved the way for competitive chess to take center stage at the EWC, the world's premier gaming and esports festival. This partnership aims to introduce chess to a broader, more global audience, showcasing its strategic depth and competitive spirit.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement over its inclusion. He emphasized that chess's global appeal and vibrant competitive scene perfectly align with the EWC's mission to unite diverse gaming communities.

Magnus Carlsen, a retired world champion and current world number one, will serve as an ambassador for the event, aiming to connect chess with a new generation of fans. He expressed his enthusiasm for this opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future players.

Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown

Chess Takes the Esports Stage

The EWC 2025, set for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, will feature a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four from a "Last Chance Qualifier," will vie for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC, marking chess's inaugural esports appearance.

To engage a wider esports audience, the CCT will feature a faster-paced format: 10-minute games with no increment, and Armageddon tiebreakers.

From its ancient Indian origins to its modern digital presence on platforms like Chess.com, chess has captivated players for centuries. The rise of online platforms, streaming, and media attention (like Netflix's "The Queen's Gambit") have propelled its popularity. Now, its official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and fans worldwide.
