Scalebound was once heralded as one of the most ambitious action projects of its time, seamlessly blending dynamic combat, an immersive musical experience, and a unique system of interaction with a massive dragon companion. Announced in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive, it garnered significant excitement but ultimately did not see the light of day. In 2017, Microsoft officially pulled the plug on its development.
Recently, the official Clovers Inc X account shared a video featuring Hideki Kamiya and his colleagues revisiting archived gameplay footage of Scalebound. During the viewing, Kamiya expressed nostalgia for the game's creative process and reaffirmed his pride in the project, despite its cancellation. Kamiya later retweeted the video, adding a poignant message directed at Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division: "Come on, Phil, let's do this!" This call-out underscores Kamiya's ongoing interest in potentially reviving the game, a sentiment he has voiced before, including in early 2022 when he expressed a desire to discuss resuming development with Microsoft.
The conversation around Scalebound's revival has persisted, with rumors intensifying in early 2023 about a possible reboot, although Microsoft has yet to make any official announcements. In an interview with the Japanese publication Game Watch, Phil Spencer responded to questions about Scalebound with a smile and the comment, "I have nothing to add at this time."
Even if Microsoft shows renewed interest, a swift return of Scalebound is unlikely. Currently, Hideki Kamiya is engaged with his studio, Clovers Inc, working on a new installment of Okami. Should Xbox greenlight the project, Kamiya could only begin development after concluding his current commitments. Yet, the continued remembrance of Scalebound after all these years fuels hope that one day, gamers might experience its long-awaited release.
