Today marks Bloodborne's 10th anniversary, with fans commemorating the occasion by launching another community-wide "Return to Yharnam" event.
FromSoftware's PS4 masterpiece first launched on March 24, 2015, establishing the Japanese studio as one of gaming's greatest developers. Despite universal acclaim and strong sales, no sequels or remasters followed—unlike the prolific Dark Souls franchise that preceded it.
A decade later, the gaming community continues to wonder: Why hasn't Sony greenlit a current-gen remaster, full sequel, or even a next-gen upgrade enabling 60fps gameplay? Since release, fans have pleaded for more Bloodborne content, making Sony's continued silence one of gaming's most baffling business mysteries.
Earlier this year, former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida offered personal speculation regarding the franchise's absence. During a Kinda Funny Games interview, Yoshida emphasized these were personal observations—not insider information about Sony's current plans.
"Bloodborne remains our most requested title," Yoshida noted. "People question why we haven't pursued even a simple remaster, given our history of revisiting legacy titles. My personal theory—and this is purely speculation—stems from Miyazaki-san's profound connection to the project. While he'd likely welcome revisiting Yharnam, his current responsibilities leave no bandwidth. Simultaneously, he may prefer keeping the vision intact rather than delegating it. I believe PlayStation honors this perspective."
The referenced Miyazaki is Hidetaka Miyazaki, FromSoftware's president and creative visionary behind landmark titles like Dark Souls and Elden Ring—the latter propelling the studio to unprecedented success, with a multiplayer spinoff arriving this year.

Miyazaki's post-Bloodborne schedule reinforces Yoshida's theory. After directing Dark Souls 3 (2016) and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019), he helmed Elden Ring's development. While Miyazaki typically deflects Bloodborne queries by noting FromSoftware doesn't own the IP, he acknowledged in 2023 that a modern hardware release would benefit players.
With official updates lacking, modders attempted to enhance the original experience. However, Sony's legal team intervened—issuing DMCA takedowns against prominent projects like Lance McDonald's 60fps patch (four years post-release) and Lilith Walther's Bloodborne PSX demake.
Recent breakthroughs in PS4 emulation, highlighted in Digital Foundry's analysis of ShadPS4, finally delivered a full 60fps experience on PC. Whether this spurred Sony's copyright enforcement remains unclear—IGN's inquiries went unanswered.
For now, the "Return to Yharnam" event offers fans their primary outlet. This 10th-anniversary iteration encourages players to create new characters, maximize co-op/invasion activity, and leave commemorative messages. As years pass without official updates, such community initiatives may become Bloodborne's lasting legacy.
