What Is DLSS?

Nvidia DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, is a proprietary system designed to improve game performance and image quality. The term "Super Sampling" refers to its ability to upscale games to higher resolutions using an Nvidia-trained neural network, which has analyzed thousands of hours of gameplay. This allows for enhanced visuals without the typical performance hit associated with manually setting higher resolutions in-game.

Initially, DLSS focused on upscaling, but it has since expanded to include features like DLSS Ray Reconstruction, which uses AI to improve lighting and shadow quality; DLSS Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation, which use AI to insert frames and boost FPS; and DLAA, or Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing, which enhances image quality beyond native resolution through AI-driven anti-aliasing.

In games that support DLSS, you can choose from settings like Ultra Performance, Performance, Balanced, and Quality. Selecting a mode like Quality in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K resolution means the game renders at 1440p, which DLSS then upscales to 4K, significantly improving frame rates due to the lower rendering resolution and AI-driven upscaling.

DLSS's neural rendering is a departure from older methods like checkerboard rendering, adding details not visible at native resolution and preserving details lost in other upscaling techniques. However, it may introduce artifacts such as "bubbling" shadows or flickering lines, though these have been considerably mitigated with DLSS 4.

The Generational Leap: DLSS 3 to DLSS 4

With the RTX 50-series, Nvidia introduced DLSS 4, which revolutionizes the AI model powering the system, enhancing its quality and capabilities. DLSS 3 and DLSS 3.5 utilized a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained on extensive video game data, analyzing scenes and spatial relationships. However, with DLSS 4, Nvidia shifted to a Transformer model, or TNN, which can process twice as many parameters, offering a deeper scene analysis and more sophisticated interpretation of inputs, including long-range patterns.

This advancement significantly improves DLSS Super Sampling and DLSS Ray Reconstruction, resulting in sharper gameplay with finer details and fewer artifacts. DLSS 4 also enhances frame generation, with DLSS Multi Frame Generation capable of generating four artificial frames per rendered frame, dramatically increasing frame rates. To mitigate potential input lag and latency issues, Nvidia integrates Nvidia Reflex 2.0 with this system.

While DLSS 4's frame generation capabilities are exclusive to RTX 50-series cards, the benefits of the Transformer model can be accessed on earlier RTX cards through the Nvidia App, which also supports DLSS Ultra Performance mode and DLAA if not natively supported by the game.

Why Does DLSS Matter for Gaming?

DLSS is a pivotal technology in modern PC gaming, enabling mid-range and lower-performance Nvidia graphics card users to enjoy higher graphics settings and resolutions. It also extends the life of GPUs, offering a cost-effective solution as graphics card prices continue to rise. DLSS has not only benefited Nvidia users but has also spurred competition, leading to AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and Intel's Xe Super Sampling (XeSS), ultimately lowering the performance-to-price barrier for gamers.
