George R.R. Martin has dropped the strongest hint yet about a potential Elden Ring film adaptation, though he admits a major obstacle stands in the way of his direct involvement.

The Game of Thrones author famously crafted the expansive lore for FromSoftware's Elden Ring, which became one of 2022's top-selling games. Developer FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco prominently featured Martin's creative contributions in their marketing, with the game's opening credits acknowledging the world was co-created by FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki and Martin himself.

When asked by IGN during Fan Fest 2025 about participating in an Elden Ring sequel, Martin avoided commenting on Elden Ring 2 but revealed intriguing news about a possible film. "While I can't share details, discussions are underway about adapting Elden Ring for cinema," Martin disclosed.

This isn't Martin's first mention of a film adaptation. FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has also expressed openness to adapting their hit game, provided they find the right creative partner. "I wouldn't oppose an Elden Ring film," Miyazaki told The Guardian. "But FromSoftware lacks expertise in film production - we'd need an exceptional collaborator we could trust completely."

Martin revealed his potential participation faces a significant hurdle: his ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. "Whether I'm heavily involved remains uncertain," he admitted. "My book deadline delays restrict how many projects I can take on."

Fans have waited over a decade for the next Song of Ice and Fire novel, with Martin candidly acknowledging the possibility it may never be completed. "Thirteen years late - I still can't believe it," he said in December. "Some claim I'll never finish. Maybe they're right, but I'm still writing!"

Martin detailed his collaboration with FromSoftware, explaining how he developed Elden Ring's deep backstory: "They wanted to understand what shaped their game world - the millennia of history before the player's story begins. Having built Westeros' complex history, I enjoyed crafting this world's mythology, magic systems, and rune lore through several intensive brainstorming sessions."

When asked if all his material appeared in the game, Martin noted: "Worldbuilding always produces more than what makes it into the final product. Like Tolkien's extensive Middle-earth histories, there's always rich material left unexplored."
