EA's eagerly awaited revival of the beloved Skate series will necessitate a constant internet connection, as confirmed by developer Full Circle in an updated FAQ on their official blog. The team provided a straightforward response to the possibility of offline play: "No." They elaborated that Skate is envisioned as a "living, breathing massively multiplayer skateboarding sandbox that is always online and always evolving." This design allows for dynamic changes to the in-game city, alongside live events and other activities that enrich the player's experience.
The requirement for an "always on" connection means that even solo players cannot enjoy the game offline. Full Circle emphasized that this is integral to delivering their vision of a connected skateboarding world. They noted, "That is probably not much of a surprise if you’ve been in our playtest," referencing the Always-On Playtest that began in September 2024. This phase is designed to evaluate the game in a continuous live environment with servers operational 24/7.
Looking ahead, Skate's early access is slated for 2025, though a specific date remains unconfirmed. Initially announced at EA Play in 2020, the game was described as being in its infancy. Since then, Full Circle has engaged the community through closed playtests and recently introduced microtransactions. Players can now purchase a virtual currency called San Van Bucks (SVB) to acquire cosmetic items.
Full Circle is keen on refining the microtransaction system during the playtest, aiming for a "positive experience when purchasing items from the Skate store." They acknowledged the unusual nature of using real money in a playtest but believe it's crucial for assessing and adjusting the system pre-launch. They assured players that any money spent during the playtest would be converted into SVB upon the reset for the Early Access launch, with potential price adjustments being a normal part of the testing process.
