The gaming industry mourns the loss of Viktor Antonov, the visionary art director behind iconic games like Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, who passed away at the age of 52. The news was confirmed by Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw through an Instagram Stories post that automatically deleted, where he described Antonov as "brilliant and original" and someone who "made everything better."

Tributes poured in from across the gaming community. Raphael Colantonio, founder of Arkane Studios and current president and creative director of WolfEye Studios, expressed his admiration and fond memories of Antonov, highlighting his instrumental role in the success of Arkane Studios. Harvey Smith, former co-creative director of Arkane Studios, also paid his respects, emphasizing Antonov's impact and talent, as well as his memorable sense of humor. Pete Hines, former Bethesda marketing chief, shared his sadness at Antonov's passing, praising his incredible talent and the joy he brought to gamers through his work on Dishonored.

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Antonov moved to Paris before joining the video game industry in the mid-90s at Xatrix Entertainment, later known as Gray Matter Studios. He became a key creative force at Valve, where he designed the iconic City 17 for Half-Life 2. His work extended to Arkane Studios, where he served as visual design director for the influential game Dishonored, co-creating the city of Dunwall. Outside of gaming, Antonov contributed to animated films like Renaissance and The Prodigies and worked with the indie production company Darewise Entertainment.

He credited his first game, Redneck Rampage, as a significant early project before moving on to more serious endeavors.

Antonov's design of City 17 in Half-Life 2 drew inspiration from his childhood city of Sofia, as well as elements from Belgrade and St. Petersburg, aiming to capture the unique atmosphere of Eastern and Northern Europe. His contributions were recently highlighted in Valve's 20th anniversary documentary for Half-Life 2, where he discussed the inspirations and visual design of his work on the project.
