Pocketpair's CEO, Takuro Mizobe, recently spoke with ASCII Japan about Palworld's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning the game to a live service model. While no decisions are finalized, Mizobe confirmed continued updates including a new map, Pals, and raid bosses.
He outlined two potential paths: completing Palworld as a buy-to-play (B2P) title or transitioning to a live service model (LiveOps). Mizobe acknowledged the financial advantages of a live service model, extending the game's lifespan and revenue streams. However, he emphasized the significant challenges involved, given Palworld's initial design wasn't built for this model.
A crucial factor is player preference. Mizobe highlighted the typical free-to-play (F2P) foundation required for a successful live service transition, contrasting it with Palworld's current B2P structure. He cited PUBG and Fall Guys as examples of successful F2P transitions, but emphasized the years of effort involved.
Mizobe also discussed other monetization options, such as in-game advertising. However, he dismissed this as impractical for a PC game like Palworld, citing the negative player reaction to ads observed in similar titles on platforms like Steam.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on increasing player engagement and retention while carefully considering Palworld's future direction. The game remains in early access, having recently launched its major Sakurajima update and the highly anticipated PvP arena. The final decision on Palworld's long-term model remains under careful consideration.
