It provides Tamang word meanings in Nepali, making it a valuable resource for comparative linguistic study and outsiders. Tamang, a Tibeto-Burman language, boasts a significant number of speakers in Nepal, primarily concentrated around the Kathmandu Valley but also present across the country. The dictionary addresses the concerning decline in Western Tamang speakers, aiming to preserve and promote the language. The dictionary's development is ongoing, and feedback is welcomed.
The dictionary distinguishes between Eastern and Western Tamang dialects, with Western Tamang prevalent in districts like Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, Chitawan, and Kanchanpur. Traditional Tamang beliefs, as reflected in the ‘Do:ra song’, suggest a Tibetan origin, with migration routes passing through the Himalayas. These beliefs also influence funerary practices.
This bilingual tool serves as a critical step in combating the language shift towards Nepali, the dominant language in the region. The developers encourage continued input to enhance the dictionary's accuracy and completeness.
