Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth's Dondoko Island: A Minigame's Unexpected Expansion Through Asset Reuse
The Dondoko Island minigame in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth surprised players with its impressive scale. Lead designer Michiko Hatoyama recently shed light on the game's unexpected growth, revealing a clever strategy of asset repurposing.
In an interview with Automaton, Hatoyama explained that Dondoko Island's initial concept was much smaller. However, during development, the scope dramatically increased. Hatoyama stated, "Initially, Dondoko Island was smaller, but it expanded unexpectedly." This expansion primarily involved significantly increasing the number of available furniture crafting recipes.
RGG Studio achieved this rapid expansion by creatively reusing and modifying existing assets from previous Yakuza games. Hatoyama revealed that creating individual furniture pieces took mere minutes, a stark contrast to the days or even months typically required for new asset creation. The extensive library of assets from the Yakuza franchise proved invaluable, enabling the team to quickly populate Dondoko Island with a vast array of furniture.
This expansion, both in terms of furniture and island size, was driven by a desire to offer players engaging and diverse gameplay. The sheer scale of the island and the extensive crafting options provide players with significant freedom and enjoyment in transforming the initial dilapidated island into a thriving resort.
Released on January 25, 2024, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the ninth mainline entry in the Yakuza series (excluding spin-offs), has been well-received. Its success, in part, is due to the clever utilization of existing assets, allowing for the creation of a surprisingly large-scale minigame in Dondoko Island, offering players countless hours of immersive gameplay.
