Avowed, the much-anticipated fantasy adventure from Obsidian Entertainment, is set to launch in 2025, and its game director, Carrie Patel, has provided a detailed preview of the game's intricate mechanics and depth. This upcoming title promises to deliver a complex gameplay experience with multiple endings, emphasizing meaningful roleplay and player choice.
In a recent interview with Game Developer, Patel highlighted that Avowed offers "moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning," ensuring that every decision, whether big or small, contributes to a comprehensive and immersive experience. "It's about giving the player moment-to-moment opportunities to express and explore where they're leaning," Patel stated. She emphasized the importance of players being mindful of their experience, asking themselves questions such as "When am I excited? When am I curious? When is my attention starting to wane? What's drawing me from moment to moment?"
The game's narrative revolves around players taking on the role of an envoy from the Aedyran Empire, tasked with uncovering the mysteries behind a spiritual plague while navigating the political landscape of The Living Lands. Patel noted that the choices and outcomes in Avowed are intricately tied to the player's exploration of the game's world, Eora. "I've enjoyed finding the stories that thread both of those worlds together," she added.
"Giving players things to dig into—that's what makes it meaningful roleplay," Patel explained, emphasizing the importance of player agency in defining their character's role within the game's world. The game also promises a strategic combat system that integrates magic, swords, and guns, offering diverse gameplay experiences based on the player's chosen abilities and weapon loadouts.
In a conversation with IGN, Patel confirmed that Avowed will feature a multitude of endings, with "a lot of different combinations" possible. She elaborated, "I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits, and you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them." Patel underscored that, true to Obsidian's style, the game's ending is a culmination of the player's choices throughout their journey, influenced by the content they encounter and how they interact with it.
